Half-Term Overview:

This half term in reception our topic is, ‘If you go down to the woods…..’. We will be learning a range of traditional tales starting with The Three Little pigs, The Gingerbread Man, The Three Billy goats Gruff, Jack and the Beanstalk and Hansel and Gretel. Through each of the stories we will be developing our enquiry skills in Science and Understanding the world. We will carry out a range of experiments involving materials and floating and sinking, and the children will be making predictions and recording results. The 5 Key Enquiry Skills are; Observing Over Time, Research, Grouping and Classifying, Comparative and Fair testing and pattern seeking.

English
In English this half term we are learning the story of ‘Goldilocks’ and the Three Bears’, through Talk for Writing. We will be looking at how stories have a beginning, middle and end and using this to create our own stories.

Maths
In Maths this half term we will be consolidating children’s knowledge of numbers up to 5 and then working on number bonds to 10. We will be using tens frames and part, part whole models to help us add and subtract numbers up to 10. The children will be using their measuring skills to measure and compare weight, height and length.

Phonics
The children are making great progress with their phonics and we will be continuing with our daily phonics lesson through Read Write Inc. Look out for video on Class Dojo to help the children practice their sounds and words online. We will also be sending home reading books to match their phonics level.

Social and Emotional Learning
This term we have introduced a new programme called ‘Think Equal ‘, this is an award-winning global charity and programme which has been fully funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and the NHS Mental Health in Education Programme, for every single 4-5-year old across the region. It is a Social and Emotional learning programme, which helps children manage their own emotions and impulsive behaviours, build their confidence and self-esteem, have empathy and show consideration for others, solve problems effectively and learn to resolve conflicts peacefully, build critical thinking skills and make responsible decisions and maintain healthy relationships and learn to collaborate. These lessons will happen three times per week.

Key Information

Class 1 will have PE on a Thursday and Class 2 on a Tuesday, so the children should come to school in their PE kit on that day.

Kind Regards
Mrs Durkan & Miss Heery
