Welcome to the SEND Page
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
Here at Gorse Hill Primary School, we firmly believe in allowing every child to achieve, despite any Special Educational Needs or Disabilities they may have.
At Gorse Hill, we use Pupil Passports to record and communicate the support and learning preferences of children on the SEND register. The Pupil Passports are a one page profile, which are completed by conversing with the child and any adults who may work with them in school. The idea behind them is to outline a clear picture of each child; what they enjoy, what they find difficult, things that they really dislike/like and ways they feel others could help them. This also includes strategies and approaches used for each particular child to enable consistency for them throughout their learning. Pupil Passports will be reviewed each term for children on the Additional Support, Enhanced Support and EHCP levels of the register. Children on the ‘School Support’ level will receive a Passport annually, in the Spring term. Parents and Carers will be sent an updated copy of each Pupil Passport.
Dyslexia Quality Award
We were successfully awarded the Dyslexia Quality Award by Trafford Council in June 2016, we have continued with the good practice from our assessment and frequently build on this. We are hoping to be re-accredited for this in the coming June. For this, we ensure all of our classrooms and workspaces are dyslexia friendly. We firmly believe that by having dyslexia friendly classrooms, we are helping all children access the curriculum more effectively, not just those with dyslexia. We made small changes such as the colour of the paper which we use for resources and which letters are sent home on, and the change in our handwriting policy. Staff have been trained to become more confident in identifying children who may have dyslexic tendencies and with strategies to support this. We like to look at dyslexia as a different way of learning, and we celebrate that we all learn differently. Every child in Year 1 will complete the Nessy ‘dyslexia screener’ to identify children early who may show signs of dyslexia. Children who score at a ‘high’ level will receive additional support and this will be discussed with Parents and Carers by the Class Teacher.
Early Years Foundation Stage
From September 2020, Mrs Shuttleworth has taken on the role of EYFS SEND Lead. This means that Mrs Shuttleworth will be the first port of call for any SEND queries for children in Nursery and Reception once she returns from Maternity Leave in the Summer 2 term. Mrs Shuttleworth’s knowledge and experience of both SEN and the EYFS curriculum, will enable us to ensure we follow our ethos of early intervention and support. I will still be available for support as and when needed.
Contact
If you have any questions or queries about SEND, please do not hesitate to contact me at school. There are three ways in which you can do this; either phone via the school office on 0161 865 1209, our SEND e-mail address: send@gorsehillprimary.co.uk, or via the Class Dojo app where I am available to all Parents and Carers as Mrs Dickinson (SENCo). The e-mail address is for Parents/Carers only, in reference to SEND. Please note, I will often be unable to come to the phone during the school day, but I will endeavour to call you back as soon as possible. E-mails and Dojo will be checked weekly, but please be aware that I am unable to send any confidential information via Dojo and e-mail, hard copies will be sent home instead. Parents/Carers are able to request SEND meetings via e-mail or phone, where we will arrange a mutually convenient time.
