Overview
Our main focus is on helping children feel confident with the building blocks of learning- reading, writing and number. Alongside this we also put great importance on developing social skills, independence and a love of learning. Some children may need a little extra support in speech and language, social communication or managing feelings. In our class we take time to understand each child's needs and provide the right support to help them succeed. This might be through small group activities, active learning, extra guidance or learning that is closely matched to their stage.
Our Autumn 1 curriculum
Maths
In our maths sessions we will be looking at composition of numbers numbers to 10 and then 20, addition and subtractions within 10 and then 20 and looking at numbers to 20 in different contexts. We will also be completing at 15 minute session on Mastering Number, focusing on the skill of subitising.
English
In our English sessions we are exploring non fiction texts. Our focus will linked to our History topic about The History of Toys. The writing skills we will be covering are
> writing for a purpose
> identifying a title and pictures with captions
> using full stops and finger space
We will explore lots of different non fiction texts and discuss how readers find information quickly in a non fiction report.
Science
In science we are looking at identifying materials and the properties of materials. We will explore properties through a variety of tests on waterproof and transparent and opaque materials.
History
In History we are exploring the history of toys. We will look at Victorian toys, 20th century toys and toys that we have now. Discussions will focus on what they were made of and how this has changed as well as how toys have moved into the digital age.
Art
In Art we are exploring Jackson Pollock and his use of movement to paint. We will use different techniques such as dripping and body movement as well as exploring colour mixing.
