Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

Here at Gorse Hill Primary School, we firmly believe in allowing every child to achieve, despite any barriers caused by Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
At Gorse Hill, we use a system called Edukey to log and monitor support for all children. Teachers will then create Learning Plans or Pupil Passports to record and communicate the support and learning preferences of children on the SEND register. Learning Plans set personalised outcomes for children to work towards through adjustments in class, interventions out of class and often set by outside agencies such as Speech and Language and Educational Psychology. They are reviewed by the Class Teacher at the end of every term and sent home to parents who can then share any views on next steps. The Pupil Passports are a one page profile for children with SEND who may just need a few reasonable adjustments in the classroom, in order to achieve to their full potential.

Dyslexia Quality Award

We were successfully awarded the Dyslexia Quality Award by Trafford Council in June 2016, we have continued with the good practice from our assessment and frequently build on this. We ensure all of our classrooms and workspaces are dyslexia friendly. We firmly believe that by having dyslexia friendly classrooms, we are helping all children access the curriculum more effectively, not just those with dyslexia. We made small changes such as the colour of the paper which we use for resources and which letters are sent home on, and the change in our handwriting policy. Staff have been trained to become more confident in identifying children who may have dyslexic tendencies and with strategies to support this. We like to look at dyslexia as a different way of learning, and we celebrate that we all learn differently. Every child in Year 1 will complete the Nessy ‘dyslexia screener’ to identify children early who may show signs of dyslexia. Children who score at a ‘high’ level will receive additional support and this will be discussed with Parents and Carers by the Class Teacher.

Partnerships for Inclusion for Neurodiversity (PINS)

We are happy to announce that Gorse Hill Primary School have been accepted onto the PINS programme for the academic year 2025-26.

Partnerships for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) is a national needs-led project being run by Parent Carer Forums (including ours) within NHS Integrated Care Boards and applies to those who are currently diagnosed and not diagnosed.

The programme brings together health and education specialists and expert parent carers through the Parent Carer Forum.

Partnerships for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools (PINS) will bring health and education specialists and expert parent carers into our school to support us with:

  • shaping whole school SEND provision
  • provide early interventions at a school level
  • upskill school staff
  • support strengthening of partnerships between schools and parent carers

We are very excited to start on this journey!

Contact

If you have any questions or queries about Special Educational Needs, please do not hesitate to contact me at school. There are three ways in which you can do this; either phone via the school office on 0161 865 1209, our SEND e-mail address: send@gorsehillprimary.co.uk, or via the Class Dojo app where I am available to all Parents and Carers as Mrs Shuttleworth. The e-mail address is for Parents/Carers only, in reference to SEND. Please note, I will often be unable to come to the phone during the school day, but I will endeavour to call you back as soon as possible. E-mails and Dojo will be checked during the school day. Parents/Carers are able to request SEND meetings via e-mail, phone or DOJO, where we will arrange a mutually convenient time.
