Moving up into Year 5 is an exciting milestone for our children. As they grow in confidence and independence, they begin to develop the key skills that will prepare them for a successful transition into Year 6.
Our aim is to provide a fun, engaging and appropriately challenging curriculum that makes a meaningful difference to every child.
As part of our Year 5 learning journey, children will experience a wide range of exciting and enriching opportunities.
Curriculum Overview
English
In English, children will develop their understanding of dialogue and how speech can be used effectively to build character and move the action forward in their writing. They will apply these skills in creative narrative work before moving on to a persuasive writing unit. During this unit, pupils will design their own innovative gadget and create persuasive content to promote and “sell” their invention to a chosen audience.
Maths
This half term, our focus is on fractions, multiplication and division. Children will recap key prior knowledge before building on their understanding of multiplying fractions and securing their fluency and confidence with multiplication and division of whole numbers.
Science
In Science, we will explore the topic of light. Children will investigate how light travels, how fast it moves, and how our eyes use light to enable us to see. Through practical investigations, pupils will deepen their scientific understanding and enquiry skills.
Art
In Art, children will develop their skills in textiles and sculpture. They will study a range of both past and contemporary artists, using these influences to inspire their own creative work.
Geography
Hazel Class will be exploring North America, developing an understanding of the continent’s population, climate and diverse landscapes. Pupils will also compare North America with the United Kingdom, identifying both similarities and differences.
PSHE
This half term’s PSHE unit focuses on Positive Thinking. Children will explore how their thoughts, feelings and behaviours are connected, and how positive thinking strategies can help them respond effectively to a range of situations in everyday life.
RE
In RE, pupils will examine how religions are expressed through places of worship and works of art. They will consider why these are important as expressions of devotion and worship, and explore how generosity and charity are practised within different faiths.
French
In French, we are “off to the shops”! Children will learn the names and locations of different shops, the types of clothing they can buy, and the currency used in France. This unit will support pupils in developing accurate pronunciation while expanding their vocabulary and conversational skills.
Computing
In Computing, pupils will explore the concept of data — how it is collected, handled and transmitted, often invisibly, across digital systems. They will develop an understanding of how data is used in everyday life and learn about the importance of keeping personal information secure and safe online.
Music
This half term, our Music learning is centred around You've Got a Friend by Carole King. Children will explore the themes of friendship within the lyrics and consider the story the song tells.
In addition, pupils will learn to play parts of the piece on the glockenspiel, developing their performance skills, musical understanding and confidence. They will also have the opportunity to create their own compositions inspired by the style and structure of the song.
