Early Reading
At Gorse Hill Primary School we want every child to develop the skills, confidence and enjoyment they need to become a successful reader and writer.
We use Read Write Inc (RWI) to teach the children the sounds they need for reading and writing in a clear, structured and engaging way. Lessons are carefully planned so that so that children can practise at the right level for their individual stage of learning.
What is RWI phonics?
Read Write Inc is a systematic phonics programme which teaches children how to
> recognise and pronounce sounds
> blend sounds together to read words
> segment words to spell
>read words containing the sounds they have learnt
> develop fluency and progression
> understand and discuss what they have read
> apply their phonics knowledge to independent writing.

Phonics at home
Small amounts if practise makes a big difference. A few minutes of regular, positive practice is a great place to start.
Reading together, practising Fred Talk and talking about words are simple things you can do at home.
Home reading books are carefully matched to your child's reading ability. Please read the home reading book several times without the week as this helps develop your child's accuracy and fluency.
